The popular Friday Market is back for 2015 in Swanage, located in the Main Beach Car Park, off Victoria Avenue (BH19 1AN). Open every Friday for the season now from 6.30am to 3pm, the market has everyday essentials as well as designer jewellery, antiques, collectables, clothing, shoes, bric-a-brac, memorabilia and more.
Meanwhile, Easter weekend looks like being a busy time at Glenlee with all rooms filled. Here's hoping for blue skies and rather warmer temperatures than of late. Still, the good thing about Swanage is there's plenty to do whatever the weather. Visit our website at www.glenleeswanage.co.uk Finally we have taken delivery of our new main fridge. It's a great big silver thing, with stainless steel that supposedly won't show finger prints. We'll see! It is big though - it has been suggested we could let it out as another room. As we're now full for the Jazz Weekend perhaps that's an idea...
The sun came out this morning - albeit briefly - for the official opening of the new beach huts along Shore Road. For more photos go to our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/GlenleeGuestHouse
Visit our website at www.glenleeswanage.co.uk The sailing vessel currently at anchor in Swanage Bay - close to the scene of this morning's launch of the new beach huts - is the 25m-long De Liefde, according to the Live Ships Map. Its destination apparently is Plymouth. Meanwhile, the map shows Trueblue off Peveril Point and, further out, Kingston.
Visit our website at www.glenleeswanage.co.uk The minutes are ticking away until the grand opening of Swanage's new beach huts along Shore Road, near the Tourist Information Centre. The road is being shut for most of the day in readiness for the celebrations, with a raffle to win a free week in one of the huts! (Don't think it's a B&B offer, and the sound of the waves might keep you awake.) Back at Glenlee, we're putting up posters ready for local activities at Easter. Seems a long way away but time will fly by. The whiff of fresh paint will have long gone by then though. The order has gone in for petunias, trailing fuchsias, salvias, lobelia, begonias and much, much more to ensure a colourful display in the front garden and hanging baskets this year. And the diary is filling up with bookings for the season ahead. Can't wait!
Visit our website at www.glenleeswanage.co.uk Yesterday the fire extinguisher people came for a routine visit and spent some time instructing us on how to ensure people can get out safely in the unlikely event of a fire. One of the extinguishers, a water one, was approaching the end of its shelf life so we had great fun letting it off in the front garden. The pressure of liquid squirting out of it proved to be handy for giving the birdbath a jet wash. Meanwhile, minor renovation works ready for the new season continue apace, including painting, varnishing and ordering of new supplies. Several new beds have been ordered, their pocket-sprung mattresses boasting "layer upon layer of sumptuous upholstery" designed to give guests "an exceptional night’s sleep". And this morning the stylish new water jugs for guest rooms finally arrived. Still awaiting (two months after ordering it) a new main fridge, but it's coming from Germany so who knows...

It was great to see them - especially Ann with her newly dyed hair ready for her MoonWalk London 2015 challenge to raise funds to help combat breast cancer. It's a lovely sunny day here in Swanage. With the Blues Festival behind us now (and what a great few days that was - a really convivial, friendly crowd and some great music) it's time for a little more maintenance and improvement work at the guest house. Meanwhile the cat wanders around the garden, in and out, observing the various activities going on, from re-varnishing the loveseats to painting fences and drainpipes, no doubt wondering why humans need to keep so busy. Surely lazing in the sun waiting for the next meal is enough... Better get on. Don't want to be caught catnapping.
Visit our website: www.glenleeswanage.co.uk We don't let animals wander around the guest house - nor should we, as our guests may have allergies to cat or dog hair and so on. However, behind the scenes lives a long-haired black-and-white moggy called Tibby. This week he's been enjoying his new-found favourite spot - curled up in a corner of the greenhouse. Being near the sea there's often a brisk breeze blowing along Cauldon Avenue, but tucked up snug and sound inside the glasshouse this pampered pet knows how to while away a sunny afternoon, venturing indoors occasionally only to see if his food bowl's been topped up. And if not, he certainly lets us know!
The Blues weekend, meanwhile, is in full swing in Swanage, with the music venues (and guest houses including us) packed and strains of various bands floating up from the town, occasionally pierced by a whistle from the steam trains. Oh I do like to be beside the seaside. Though I somehow doubt that particular song will be performed during the festival. Another busy day at Glenlee, with another new double glazing panel fitted in Room 1. We do like our guests to enjoy a good view of Beach Gardens. Meanwhile, more thermostatic shower controls were fitted, the monthly accounts finished, another room re carpeted ... then it was time for breakfast! (Not really. It was time for tea.) Chilly evening tonight here in Swanage but in a couple of days the place will be heaving for the first Blues Festival of 2015. Roll on the music....
Visit our website at www.glenleeswanage.co.uk The first guests checked in this evening for the Swanage Blues Festival, the first of two such events held annually. If it's anything like the last one, in October, it'll be a fantastic few days. The town really comes alive when one of the many festivals take place, or during the Swanage Carnival and Regatta week, or in fact whenever the sea and sky are blue and the sun is out. This afternoon was lovely, which bodes well for the busy weekend.
In other news, meanwhile, the local paper is reporting that a new £3million Government fund has been created which could help with the maintenance and sustainability of Swanage Pier. CLICK HERE to read more. www.glenleeswanage.co.uk Another busy day at the guest house. A less-than-scintillating but necessary annual task is making an inventory of all laundry items, from pillowcases to blankets, bathmats to hand towels. The job involves not only counting the number of each item but also inspecting them for damage, wear or, in the case of sheets, measuring them for shrinkage. It's amazing how much a cotton sheet does shrink with frequent washing - to the point where there's no longer enough to tuck in. Having assessed the requirements, a large order was then placed with a hospitality supplier - with luck that lot will last the season.
While two of the rooms were having new carpets fitted, a local gardening enthusiast was busy in the front garden, pruning roses and pulling out weeds until she was gasping for a cup of tea. Then it was time to tackle the past month's accounts, with the help of a familiar figure at Glenlee. And tomorrow? Who knows? New thermostatic shower controls have arrived and need fitting, and another double glazing panel is expected this week. Still lots to do before the busy season gets under way. It's that time of year for a spot of maintenance and the outside of the guest house is getting some fresh paint. Tomorrow, a couple of rooms will be fitted with new carpets. Like the proverbial Forth Bridge, it never really stops, but this is the perfect time of year to upgrade a few areas and spruce things up before the season gets under way. That said, we'll be full next weekend for the Swanage Blues Festival. If it's anything like the October one last year it'll be a fantastic event - come rain or shine (or hail, as we had this afternoon).
